Background
About Amanda Snider
Supporting international populations and facilitating cross-cultural understanding are guiding principles in my career. Whether teaching abroad, researching less commonly studied languages, or supporting refugee resettlement in the Midwest, I strive to create a world where people can find home and connection. Currently, I serve as a Program Coordinator for Refugee Benefits for the Kansas Office for Refugees, under the guidance of the International Rescue Committee. This position involves managing the refugee cash assistance program, which provides direct cash assistance for new Kansans in their first 12 months in the United States. I plan trainings on program policies and provide technical assistance, conduct monitoring and evaluation, and ensure that the program is in compliance with federal regulations through regular quality assurance. Previously, I served as the assistant director of the University of Kansas Center for East Asian Studies, a Title VI National Resource Center, where I assisted with grant management, budget reporting, outreach programming, and language fellowship coordination. I also coordinated the Uyghur language program, using my expertise from time spent in the region to promote Uyghur studies. I hold an MA from the University of Kansas in anthropology and a BA in sociology and philosophy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. My research focused on the reinvention of a Uyghur gathering known as meshrep, finding that while Uyghurs in Xinjiang can no longer hold these gatherings in their homes, the word itself has become a symbol of Uyghur identity. Prior to coming to KU, I spent several years studying, working, and living in far western China, where I developed a strong interest in Uyghur language and culture. Living abroad and supporting international populations in the US has taught me the value of diversity, communication, and connectedness. I enjoy working alongside strong, collaborative teams to create more inclusive and equitable spaces for all.
