Through my 12 years of nursing experience, I have held a number of different positions within the industry. Although there are many, I feel there are two major characteristics that I developed during my nursing career that have proven to be beneficial thus far. The first is the importance of resilience. There will be good days and bad, but if you can reflect on your successes and learn from your failures, you will overcome and become a better person. The second characteristic is gratitude. Being a nurse will challenge you, and there will be more trying days than not. Developing mindfulness towards gratitude allows you to remember that we get to take care of people in both big and small ways. Sometimes they are scared, and sometimes we're all they have. We play an important role in our patients' lives, and that isn't something to take for granted.
