Background
About Amy Romer
I live in "North Vancouver" on the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and xwməθkwəýəm (Musqueam) Nations. With over seven years of freelancing as a visual journalist, I've worn a few hats. They all mesh well together, and today, I feel lucky to have a diverse set of creative skills on offer. Things I can help with- Writing - Photography - Video and podcast production - Fact-checking - Research I'm a National Geographic Explorer (2018 - 2022), and Global Reporting Centre grant recipient (2022 - 2023). My current journalism projects look at the criminalization of Indigenous fishers in the Salish Sea, and child "welfare" for Indigenous children and families. My work, which centres trauma-informed practices, has been published widely including Reuters, The Walrus, IndigiNews, The Globe and Mail, The Narwhal, The Tyee, The Guardian and the The Philanthropist Journal. I also help nonprofits build authentic photo libraries, including PLEA Community Services, MOSAIC and Coast Mental Health Foundation. In 2019, my series 'The Dark Figure*', a visual investigation which documented UK neighbourhoods affected by modern-day slavery, was published as a photobook by Another Place Press and was exhibited at the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. In 2017, I was PhotoVoice's "ethical photographer of the year" for my collaboration with 12-year-old Alfred, who lives with Asperger's syndrome. The project,'In A Sense' was exhibited at Faces in Focus in London, and received an honourable mention at the 2017 International Photo Awards. I graduated from multimedia journalism at Falmouth University in 2016. When I'm not working, you can find me climbing something, or running somewhere. That said, it might be easier to find me online. My quickest response will be via email and text. Twitter Instagram LinkedIn +1 604 213 2441 info[at]amyromer.com
