Play, creativity, song, inquiry, delight in others’ discoveries and successes and the desire to make a difference in people’s lives is what lead me to become a teacher. Somewhere in the process of becoming a teacher, I became aware of the challenges faced by learners who, in addition to learning basic academics, must also learn English. I was inspired to become an Elementary ESL Teacher. For the past decade and a half, or so, that is what I have been doing. I have spent much of my time planning lessons and devising engaging activities for my students. The students worked with me in short periods of time throughout the week. I knew that I made a difference in their lives when I saw the delight in their eyes as I met them at their classrooms. That children passing in the hallway asked me when they would get to come with me also told me that I made a me that made a difference.
