About Amy Witter
I am a chemist who uses analytical instrumentation and problem-solving strategies to determine the identities and amounts of unknown substances in complex matrices. In my early career I used electrochemical methods (DPASV, SWV) to investigate trace metal (Cu, Fe) cycling in the environment and ocean. In mid-career I used chromatographic methods (GC-MS, LC-MS) to investigate unknown substances in urban runoff. At present, I utilize spectroscopic methods (ATR-FTIR) and chemometrics to assess leaching from coatings applied in the construction industry with the aim of better identifying non-point pollution sources in urban areas. As an educator, I teach courses in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, forensic analytical science, and general chemistry. As the director of an international program in New Zealand, I mentor college students studying abroad for a semester or year. As a citizen, I utilize my analytical training to identify drugs of abuse with the aim of harm reduction.
