About Andreas Matthaiou
Andreas M. Matthaiou, M.D. is a Cypriot-Australian medical doctor and researcher with a special interest in respiratory medicine. He currently holds positions as: i) a Medical Resident in Respiratory Medicine at the Sotiria Thoracic Diseases General Hospital of Athens; ii) a Doctoral Candidate at the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Pneumonology of the Medical School of the University of Crete; and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Respiratory Physiology Laboratory of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. He entered the Medical School of the University of Cyprus in 2013, after ranking first in the Cyprus National Examinations (2011) among 9,605 candidates, and graduated as the first Valedictorian and Hippocratic Oath Reciter (class of 2019) and the recipient of six N.K. Shacolas Prizes of excellence (2014-19).He is an active member of the Hellenic Thoracic Society (HTS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and an expert at the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (E-COST). As of 2024, he has joined, after competitive selection, the ERS Methodology Network for the development of clinical practice guidelines and the ERS College of Experts for the review of applications for the ERS fellowships and awards. He is also an authorised manager of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry (ECFSPR) for Cyprus and a contributor in the ECFSPR Annual Reports.His research interests fall under the prism of translational science and mainly focus on the immunopathogenesis of respiratory diseases, the genetic pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia, and the impact of extreme climate phenomena on respiratory health. He has received two Clinical Research Awards by the HTS for research projects investigating the immune dysregulation that characterises bronchiectasis and asthma. His work has been published in respiratory medical and multidisciplinary peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented in national and international conferences.
