About Andrei Ionescu

Software engineer with almost a decade of experience in C# and Unity3D, mostly in the context of EduTech. I'm also in love with Rust and maintain an interest in backend. I have a passion for well-architected software, and I happily earn my paycheck by making sure the design of the software I'm working on serves real-world product needs. Anyone can say something like that, but carrying it out in practice is different. After working 6.5 years on the same 3D EduTech simulation product, I've been there to see the long-term effects of architectural and product decisions, and to make plenty of my own, both in the role of developer and in the role of technical lead. I've experienced working with legacy and greenfield projects and seen the unique challenges they bring. I'm a big believer in the power of software. I think software nerds that can understand the context of their work on a deep level, and communicate effectively with non-coders, can help make the world a better place. I have a strong interest in engineering in general, since my university curriculum was stuffed full of thermodynamics, electrical engineering, systems control, hydro-power engineering etc. I applied my skill in software to this engineering context and produced a thesis where I used Binary Particle Swarm Optimization, a somewhat exotic algorithm, to solve the problem of creating economically optimal on/off schedules for power plants. My first and greatest passion is video gaming, and as a result game development as well. That's what got me into software development in general. I still fondly remember dabbling in Warcraft map editor as a teenager. I also hold a world record in speedrunning a very niche game. My second passion is music, and I've dabbled in composing using a DAW, but don't worry, I'll spare you having to listen to amateur work! Regardless, it can be very fulfilling. Thirdly, and more recently, fitness has been devouring my attention. Lifting some weights at the gym helps my monkey brain stay sane after several hours of typing away at a keyboard - but the human brain keeps trying to further optimize my workout schedule!
