Background
About Andrew Affleck
After nearly 15 years in neuropathology and brain banking, I’m beginning a new chapter — bringing my love of science and discovery into the classroom. My career has been dedicated to understanding the human brain and the diseases that affect it. As Senior Hospital Scientist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, I managed several of Australia’s leading research brain banks — including the Australian Sports Brain Bank, Australian Veterans Brain Bank, and MS Australia Brain Bank. These programs have supported critical research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), multiple sclerosis (MS), and other neurodegenerative diseases, built on the generosity of incredible brain donors and their families. My PhD at the University of New South Wales explored how antihypertensive medication use influences microscopic changes in the ageing brain, reinforcing the powerful link between heart health and brain health. Throughout my career, I’ve valued collaboration, mentorship, and scientific communication — helping researchers, clinicians, and students connect complex discoveries to real-world impact. Now, as a Science Teacher at Oxley College, I’m excited to inspire the next generation of scientists, doctors, and innovators. My goal is to nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep appreciation for how science shapes our understanding of ourselves and the world. I remain passionate about STEM education, neuroscience outreach, and creating learning environments that encourage students to explore, question, and discover. 🧠 Science is about asking good questions — and I’m thrilled to help young minds learn how to ask theirs.
