Safety, attention to detail along with critical thinking and decision-making skills in the moment makes for an exceptional logistics and transportation professional. I bring a unique blend of experience and 9 incident-free years of operations that move large volumes of freight using multiple trains simultaneously over an array of railway networks. What I do with trains is very similar to what an air traffic controller does with airplanes. Witnessing the number trains and volume of activity on a limited set of railways for yourself is an eye-opening experience. The trains I manage intersect life in communities large and small and touch the lives of thousands of support workers and those who live in the places trains run. This is a job that lies behind the rumbling of the locomotives, the clanging of crossing signals and the activity at marshalling yards. I am highly skilled at maintaining moment-to-moment mindfulness that surpasses situational awareness because so much can happen in a minute. In those moments, I manage multiple actions that morph into a dynamic, interrelated transportation system. I engage in real-time communications and simultaneously manage other inputs, such as instant messaging, 2-way radio, emails and phones in a deadline-driven environment. When things break down (and they always do), either mechanically or logistically, I coordinate an immediate response and shift resources while also keeping management apprised. All that happens non-stop throughout the shift, every day. It could be much more stressful than it is but by exercising acute attention to detail and leveraging my expertise and experience, I succeed as a highly regarded controller to keep crowded railroads moving freight for safe, cost-effective operations.
