About Andrew Dobson

My driving interest is automated mining equipment for use on Earth and on our Moon. On Earth autonomous mining equipment can help reduce the number of people in mine environments, and hence reduce the costs associated with keeping them healthy and happy in remote areas. On our Moon this equipment could help stockpile fuel, water, oxygen, and `waste' material for base construction. Having these resources available in a relatively low gravity environment has tremendous implications for increasing space access, development, and settlement. I have extensive robotics experience, designing, deploying, and maintaining large mobile robot fleets for Clearpath Robotics (OTTO Motors). I also implemented successful autonomous digging routines on a 1 tonne surface loader and an Atlas Copco ST14. Both experiences required in depth plant modelling, algorithm development, and controller tuning. In addition, I developed mechatronics skills by designing, programming, and calibrating a pressure and force measurement system for the 1 tonne loader. My masters and undergrad degrees were both in aerospace structures, and I participated in many projects that required detailed structural modeling, design, analysis, fabrication, and testing. Through these projects I became an adept machinist both with manual and CNC equipment. I continue to practice my design and fabrication skills as a head carpenter for various theatrical productions in my spare time. Finally, I have received numerous awards and commendations for my teaching and technical communication skills.
