Background

About Andrew Friedman

Health is one of the most fundamental aspects of a person’s life — shaping not only physical well-being but also mental and social fulfillment. From an early age, I recognized the deep impact that medical care can have on individuals and families, particularly those in underserved communities. Growing up with a single mother in Miami and witnessing the challenges my grandparents faced in Colombia instilled in me a profound drive to make healthcare accessible, equitable, and compassionate. My journey toward medicine has been shaped by personal experiences and professional growth. When my grandmother lost her vision after a stroke, I saw firsthand how illness can reshape a person’s identity and how critical compassionate care is to patients and their families. These early experiences, alongside years of learning and working as a clinical research coordinator, strengthened my commitment to become a physician who not only treats disease but also restores hope. As a current medical student at Howard University College of Medicine, I am deeply passionate about plastic surgery — especially head and neck reconstruction, while remaining open to areas like burn care and hand surgery. My interest was ignited in part by my aunt’s journey through breast cancer and mastectomy. Seeing how reconstructive surgery helped restore her confidence and self-esteem opened my eyes to the unique power of plastic surgery: it bridges the physiological and psychological, helping patients not only heal but reclaim their sense of self. What excites me most about plastic surgery, particularly in the head and neck, is its delicate balance of restoring both function and form. The face and neck are central to human identity and everyday function, and the ability to help patients regain both their appearance and their abilities — speaking, eating, smiling — is profoundly meaningful. Whether cosmetic or reconstructive, plastic surgery has an extraordinary impact on a patient’s quality of life, and I am passionate about pursuing a career that combines surgical precision, creativity, and human connection. I’m eager to continue growing as a medical student, collaborating with mentors and colleagues, and exploring the many dimensions of this incredible field.
