Background
About Andrew Garrett
I am deeply passionate about belonging, community building, and bringing people together across differences - social and sectoral. I have 10+ years of experience as a theatre artist, administrator, and educator; 2+ years of experience in social services in mental health and youth homelessness; and am currently gaining experience in local government, B Corporations, and consulting. I lead with positivity, love meeting new people, thrive in the hustle of productivity and creative problem solving, and am most at home in conversations and presentations. LEARNING I am currently in graduate school at NYU studying Public Administration with a specialization in Social Impact, Innovation, and Investment. ASPIRING I aspire to work in social impact, for macro level bridge building, multi-sector, and management and leadership consulting organizations rooted in civic engagement, creative storytelling, and advocacy. I aspire for my work to foster better communication and understanding between those implementing and impacted by public, private, and nonprofit sector decisions. I believe that this can be done in part through convening, depolarization, and by inspiring individuals to more actively serve the social causes they care about. REFLECTING The professional experience that has most shaped me is facilitating New York Theatre Workshop’s Mind the Gap: Intergenerational Theatre Workshop. Teaching this program, which fosters understanding between elders and teens, around the world sparked my passion for public service. My career pivot, from theatre to social impact, is driven by a desire for my work to transcend artistic spaces and more sustainably and tangibly impact the lives of those in my community. LIVING Outside of work, I stay active with my friends, family, and girlfriend exploring the outdoors, planning adventures near and far, hosting dinner parties, and engaging with theatre, tv, film, and music. As a white cisgender heterosexual man, I work to understand the privilege with which I move through the world and I am dedicated to helping and understanding all people.
