Background
About Andrew Grech
Fully certified in the EU and UK, I’m a substantive consultant paediatric anaesthetist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, having recently relocated from a similar role in Malta. I am also a current examiner for the EDAIC Part 2 final examination, a regular instructor on NLS/EPALS/ALS courses, and a Dundee-trained educationist. I'm also a #WHOFides voice! After obtaining my CCT in 2020, I completed an APAGBI-recognised subspecialty fellowship in advanced paediatric anaesthesiology at Sheffield Children’s Hospital before pursuing further fellowship experience in paediatric critical care as a retrievalist with the North West Paediatric Intensive Care Transport Service (NWTS). As a proponent of lifelong learning, I hold an MSc in Internal Medicine (Edinburgh, 2016) as well as the Intercollegiate MRCS diploma (2018) alongside European (EDAIC, 2020) and Irish (FCAI, 2021) anaesthesiology qualifications. My interest in evidence-based medical education also led me to pursue a Masters in Medical Education (Dundee, 2022). — Within paediatric anaesthesiology, I am passionate about TIVA (especially propofol-sparing adjuncts) & advanced regional anaesthesia as well as peri-operative child psychology. I hold a wider interest in regional anaesthesia as a whole & also in transfer medicine. I also hold a fellowship diploma in wilderness medicine. — As a fledging anaesthesiologist, I spent years nurturing a wide range of professionally relevant non-technical skills including clear communication, assertive and informed decision-making, dynamic team working, fluid leadership styles, strategic task prioritisation & management, peer coaching & education. As a paediatric subspecialist, I have further developed and honed many transferable skills. These are my “Top 3”… Precision When anaesthetising or resuscitating a sick child or baby, details matter; very little room for error requires meticulous preparation and execution. Pragmatism Not every room in every hospital has every piece of equipment; I have learned to make the most of different software, hardware, environmental & liveware resources available in diverse high stakes situations. Prompt problem-solving When things go wrong while providing anaesthesiology care to tiny humans, seconds can make the difference between success & catastrophe; razor sharp situational awareness, lightning quick analytical skills & prompt problem-solving are literal lifesavers. — Plus, I’m always keen to connect with colleagues working in anaesthesia, critical care, medical education, and management in medicine.
