About Andrew Hey

I am an approachable European and UK Patent Attorney at Withers & Rogers LLP, with a track record of providing clients from multinational corporations to SMEs with sound, commercially focused advice. I guide clients through IP protection process and help develop strategies tailored to their business needs, covering everything from invention capture processes, patent drafting, representing clients before the UK and European patent offices, as well as managing international patent filing programmes. I have also represented clients in contentious opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office, acting for both proprietors defending their own patents, as well as opponents challenging the validity of third-party patents. My academic background in Physics has given me a good grounding for dealing with technology in the physical, mechanical, electronic and computing arts. For example, much of my work involves handling inventions relating to control, actuation and sensing for aerospace and industrial applications. I also have extensive experience in software patenting, helping clients navigate the particular complexities of European and UK patent law relating to computer-implemented inventions. Following my doctorate in hybrid and organic photovoltaics, I remain passionate about all things clean technology, and I am a member of the specialist clean technology team at Withers & Rogers. As well as clients in the field of renewable power generation technologies, I work with clients developing solutions across the clean technology space, including vehicle electrification and charging, and replacement aerospace actuation components facilitating a move to alternative fuels. I am also a member of W&R’s specialist rail technology team, with a particular interest in technologies helping to de-carbonise the rail sector.
