Background
About Andrew Jonson
As a passionate and highly skilled strength and conditioning coach, sports scientist, and PhD candidate, I am deeply committed to optimizing athlete performance across a range of sports, with a particular focus on AFL and high-performance environments. I bring over five years of experience working with athletes, including my time as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Development Colts at Claremont Football Club, where I designed and implemented performance-driven training programs that focused on strength, power, injury prevention, and overall athletic development. My coaching philosophy, focuses on educating, developing, and empowering athletes through positive and engaging experiences. I prioritise building meaningful relationships to adopt a cohesive and motivated environment. I value open communication, welcome feedback, and strive to understand and respect everyone’s unique background and circumstances. Currently, I am completing my PhD at Swinburne University of Technology, where my research centers around the implementation of vertical jump force-velocity-power profiling in youth Australian footballers. My work aims to bridge the gap between sports science research and practical application, helping to enhance athletic performance through data-driven approaches. This academic foundation, combined with my applied coaching experience, positions me as a leader in developing and delivering performance strategies that maximize athlete potential. I have a deep interest in high-performance management and aspire to take on a full-time role as a Head Strength and Conditioning Coach or High-Performance Manager, particularly within the AFL or the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC). I aim to utilize my expertise in athlete profiling, strength and power training, and recovery to build high-performing teams and optimize individual athlete success. My goal is to foster not only physical development but also mental resilience, creating comprehensive programs that support athletes' well-being and long-term success. In addition to my academic and coaching roles, I also bring a strong background in teaching and mentorship, having worked as a laboratory demonstrator and research assistant at Swinburne University. I am passionate about educating the next generation of sports scientists and strength coaches, helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the dynamic field of sports performance.
