Background
About Andrew King
I help others conserve endangered species and navigate the complexities of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). With over three decades of experience applying ecological science to environmental planning and regulatory compliance, I specialize in developing practical, science-based solutions that balance conservation priorities with project goals. As the Deputy Field Supervisor and Endangered Species Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Indiana Field Office, I provide leadership on ESA implementation, ecological planning, and partnership engagement across a wide range of conservation and regulatory programs. I oversee complex Section 7 ESA consultations, Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs), NEPA analyses, and species recovery and permitting efforts.I also serve as the national recovery lead for the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), authoring and coauthoring key documents such as the current recovery plan, 5-year reviews, and range-wide survey guidelines. I coordinate the biennial Indiana bat winter population surveys across 20 states and serve as an instructor for the Service’s national acoustic bat survey training course.Earlier in my career, I worked as an environmental consultant, conducting rare species field surveys and preparing Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans (INRMPs) for Department of Defense installations (Army, Navy, and Air Force). My client portfolio included the U.S. Forest Service, OSMRE, state agencies, departments of transportation, and private-sector energy companies in natural gas, coal, and utilities.Throughout my career, my focus has remained the same: to conserve wildlife habitat, recover rare species, and help partners achieve ESA compliance effectively and collaboratively.Specialties:Bat ecology and conservation • ESA administration and compliance • HCP development • NEPA and Sikes Act planning • Bat survey design • Environmental project management • Event Planning
