About Andrew MacIntosh
My current role is Senior Scientist, Wildlife Conservation at the Wilder Institute / Calgary Zoo. I couldn't be happier to be applying my knowledge and skills to support conservation action in my home country of Canada-Research- I have over 20 years of experience in wildlife science; in Central America, West Africa, East and Southeast Asia, even Antarctica. I do cross-disciplinary research through domestic and international collaboration on animal-animal and animal-environment interactions. My work has always had implications for wildlife health, conservation, and welfare, but I'm thrilled to apply my skills and lessons learned for conservation in Canada and beyond. I've published over 70 articles in international scientific journals, books and encyclopedias. I've received most-cited paper awards and the Takashima Prize for outstanding early-career scientist in primatology in 2013. I procured or helped procure in the ballpark of in grant funding from 2012-2024-Teaching- I previously taught in the Institute for Liberal Arts and Science and the Graduate a school of Science at Kyoto University. I used evidence-based teaching practices and state-of-the-art methods with flipped learning and ed-tech. I trained, supported or mentored over a dozen graduate students, a handful of postdoctoral fellows, and countless internship students in critical thinking, study design, field and laboratory protocols, data analysis and science communication in all its forms-Professional Service- As faculty at Kyoto University, I sat on multiple internal committees and helped manage the Center for International Collaboration and Advanced Studies in Primatology (CICASP). I currently sit on the Animal Welfare, Ethics and Research Committee (AWERC) to ensure that research involving the Wilder Institute / Calgary Zoo is ethical and robust. I am Associate Editor for the academic journals Proceedings of the Royal Society B and EcoHealth. I previously served on the editorial boards of Nature Scientific Reports and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. I have reviewed manuscripts and proposals for over 30 publishers and granting agencies-Science Communication- I'm passionate about communicating science. I co-taught a graduate seminar in science communication at Kyoto University for 13 years. I've hosted and produced a podcast called The PrimateCast since 2012, interviewing expert and emerging primatologists, conservationists, animal welfare scientists, and more. The podcast has been downloaded over times, and counting.
