About Andrew Pitman

I'm a climate scientist with 35 years experience in building climate models, using them to understand climate change and teasing out what these models are good for, and what their limits are. I've worked on how well the models simulate extremes including rainfall and temperature. I've recently been working on compound events - these are the risks associated with the co-occurrence of two extremes. I was a lead author, and review editor of the model evaluation chapters in two IPCC reports. In the last decade I have been engaging with business on the connection between the physical climate science and business risk. I have been trying to communicate where the models are valuable tools in assessing risk, and where their limits are. I am trying to help vaccinate businesses against misuse of climate models, while ensuring that they do utilise climate change projections appropriately to identify risks and opportunities. In this regard I have worked with global climate models, regional climate models, components of models, and most recently the use of AI to offer alternatives to downscaling.
