About Andrew Sever

Hi! I’m Andrew Sever, a recent graduate from The Ohio State University with a BS degree in Earth Science, a Minor in Environmental Science and certification in Natural History Museum Curation. I have completed numerous courses with in-depth lab work, including biology, chemistry, and a variety of earth science courses. In addition to my lab experience, I have also engaged in an 8-week capstone course involving intensive field work to apply classroom principles to real and controversial geological problems. My course emphasis included observation of stratigraphic units and their characteristics, interpretation and synthesis of structures, paleoenvironments, and geologic history. I have experience with 3D visualization, GIS, GPS, and computer analysis of field data. I have also completed in-depth thesis research with a focus in paleontology and museum curation. My research involved the examination and investigation of Orton Geological Museum fossil specimen, Megalonyx jeffersonii, to identify and record skeletal inaccuracies and/or inconsistencies. I researched historical records to further identify, analyze, and document authentic fossilized sections of the specimen versus fabrications based on speculation or generalizations from other known specimens. I completed formal independent study and practical training in the Orton Geological Museum providing disciplinary expertise and curatorial training in museum curation with an emphasis on natural history collections. I am currently putting this experience to good use as a volunteer at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s paleontology department where I catalog fossil specimens and their associated data in a new, online medium. I also have experience with water quality monitoring using water chemistry and macroinvertebrate research to determine stream health. As of June, 2024, I have been an Engineering Technician at CTL Engineering in Brunswick, Ohio. On a daily basis, I am sent to construction sites and work zones throughout the state, usually alone but occasionally as part of a team, in order to perform a series of tests on building and structural materials in order to ensure safety compliance. I have earned my ACI certification, as well as a certification in Nuclear Density Gauge usage, and I regularly perform tests on concrete, rebar, asphalt, and soil. I am also responsible for compiling my results into a technical report for use by our company and our clients. I work in all environments and conditions, I travel long distances often, with occasional overnight work, and I track my own hours.
