About Andrew Tobin

At Toi Āria: Design for Public Good we all wear many hats, but the one that fits me best is designing people engagement strategies: ones that allow most-affected people to inform or co-design guidelines, policies and services that actually help them to visualise and claim their potential. Human-centred design has come of age – but for more people to have meaningful, authentic input into issues and actions that directly affect them, it takes more than traditional market research and policy consultation approaches.The best opportunities to grow knowledge in this area have so far come from projects that allow truly open-ended inquiry, with no 'expected outcomes'. This is only possible through very open and equal partnership with clients who have a real need to understand – and act on – the actual needs of people they want to benefit.
