About Andrew Woolbright

As an Adjunct Professor at SUNY New Paltz, my objective is to foster a community of students creating non-conventional and mature work that is uniquely individual while still responsive to contemporary culture. I facilitate this sense of community through collaborative and open minded class critiques, hosting biweekly MFA film critique evenings, and biannual gallery visit days to Manhattan and Brooklyn. My ultimate career pursuit is to support in building a nationally recognized, competitive program which places students successfully within the art world. In my personal practice, I create site specific oil paintings installed in gallery spaces to mimic baroque encounters. I’m a Romantic, and believe paintings are machines of love and affect. The figures in my paintings are Shrinebeasts, an aspirational and speculative evolutionary condition of humans based on love and kinship. My work is inspired by the physical and psychic traces of love, influenced by Chagall, William Blake, and Pablo Neruda. I founded Super Dutchess, a commercial gallery space located at 53 Orchard Street NY in 2017. The artist curators of Super Dutchess gallery believe in disrupting traditional gallery hierarchies and feel it is their responsibility within the community to make challenging work accessible, 7 days a week. Striving for new contexts that include the work of both fresh faces and established aesthetic veterans, Super Dutchess is committed to creating a fresh and collaborative gallery model that champions artists worthy of consideration.
