About Andy Hughes

I am fully retire as of June 30, 2017 I am a Purdue Master Gardener, class of 2012 and have over 500 volunteer hours for silver level Master Gardener. I volunteer primarily in the vegetable Demonstration Garden where the Master Gardeners have donated over lbs of produce per year for the last 4 years to local food pantries. I am also webmaster for the Tippecanoe County Master Gardeners, tippecanoemastergardener.org I have given presentations to the group on Organic Pest Control, and along with my wife Konie (a gold level - 500 volunteer hours Master Gardener), a presentation on Straw Bale Gardening. I am presently testing out cover crops for several areas of the Demonstration Garden, am on the composting committee, ordered and helped install the new watering system for the Demo Gardens and am chair of the Native Bees Network at the gardens. I am an avid Pickleball player, and started playing in Oct 2015, however since I have played many racquet sports in the past, I quickly adapted and consider myself an to be at the intermediate to advanced level. In 2106 I got third place in the men's senior games Pickleball tournament and with my partner Dave Zimmerman won 2nd place in the Lafayette Pickleball tournament, mens' 3.0 level. The Lafayette tournament was not age delineated, so I was happy with my performance against some younger players. I am captain of a golf team of the Purdue Staff Golf League, and we took second place in our league this year. I was invited to play in the local Ryder Cup where our Monday League plays against the Wednesday league and I won my match. My best score in 2017 for 18 holes is a 78, with 3 birdies in a round. I still play the white tees (not senior tees).
