Prince2 Agile Practitioner, MAPM, MBCS, BEng (Hons) Senior Project Manager with 20+ years in hardware infrastructure projects. Prince2 Agile Practitioner qualified since Nov 2011. Desktop refresh programme In 2024, I worked with Balfour Beatty - the UK’s largest construction and infrastructure provider - to oversee the replacement of the company’s vast fleet of laptops. I was tasked with outlining the project’s key deliverables to align with Balfour Beatty’s strategic ESG goals, taking care to minimise disruption to employees. It was important we fully complied with: • data security standards • adopt eco-friendly practices for recycling old equipment • and contribute to local communities through the donation of refurbished laptops. Collaboration with Balfour Beatty entailed the design of a multi-phase rollout strategy that would balance user needs and sustainability goals and this included logistics, scheduling, and communications to ensure employees were well-prepared for the transition. This included overseeing implementation across 25 sites from Southampton to Glasgow | Optimising logistics to minimise carbon footprint | User-Centric deployment to ensure Balfour Beatty’s employees could schedule their own handover appointments and this reduced downtime, and enabled staff to swiftly transition to their new devices | Ensuring Compliance and Security by upholding strict data security measures with all returned laptops. The laptops were audited and data-wiped according to compliance standards. The disposal process was transparent and compliant with all environmental regulations. Our Sustainability and Circular Economy goals were to reduce waste. The devices were graded for potential refurbishment, recycling, or safe disposal. Those deemed reusable were refurbished for resale, reuse by Balfour Beatty or for charitable donation, while others were harvested for parts to be recycled or resold, minimising landfill impact. Outcome Happy to say we achieved significant sustainability milestones while enhancing user experience. These included cost efficiency and security | Enhanced User Satisfaction in that a managed, seamless transition process took place and individualised technical support boosted employee confidence and productivity. By adopting a circular economy model, over legacy laptops were repurposed, significantly reducing electronic waste. This comprehensive approach to recycling not only kept devices out of landfills but also reduced the environmental cost associated with new manufacturing processes.
