Background

About Ange Cooper

I am a Psychologist in private practice, previously Assistant Dean of Faculty Wellness in the Faculty of Medicine and Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. I am currently training in Internal Family Systems Therapy and this adds to my diverse therapeutic portfolio and interests including: Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, Spirituality, evolving consciousness and Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). I have completed over 13 years of post doctoral training in a variety of psychotherapy models. This comprehensive training has significantly deepened my therapeutic knowledge, enabling me to assess and treat a diverse range of mental health difficulties. I previously worked for the Centre of Emotions and Health and undertook a three-year pilot project to provide consultation, assessment, treatment, teaching and research using ISTDP to address the unconscious emotional processes that are believed to underlie many physical and somatic difficulties. These include: chronic pain, chest pain, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal issues, headache, migraine, memory difficulties, muscle weakness and other mind body problems. These difficulties are often co-morbid with anxiety, depression, personality issues and/or trauma. The aim of the project is to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of this approach as applied in a primary care setting. This includes evaluating the direct therapeutic outcomes with patients, as well as the impact of teaching and training on physicians and other health care professionals. I continue to offer supervision, teaching and training in ISTDP, online and face to face and can be contacted at drcooper1@hotmail.com. I am committed to the dissemination and promotion of ISTDP as an integrated, open and inclusive model of therapy. I am particularly passionate about using the ideas from ISTDP to build emotional health and capacity in clinicians across all fields of health; if we don't take care of our own mental and emotional well being, we can seriously limit our ability to effectively care for our patients.
