About Angela McLaughlin

I have been in corporate communications for some time, but I still approach the job as if I'm in a newsroom. I now measure stories against business goals, but I'm still enough of the idealistic kid that went across the country for journalism school to believe that media, PR pros, and owned content can have a mutually beneficial relationship. I spent my first career trying to find the best possible stories to engage viewers and make them want to watch. Now I try to find the best stories that will help the right reporters and editors reach their readers with my company's story. Lately I've loved doing more internal comms, which means I get more direct feedback about what the audience needs. What I am looking for in my next career move is both simple and complicated. I want to use my love of digging out a good story and ability to work with people from interns to CEOs. I want to be a part of a team. I want to tell a story that I can believe in. I don't need to stand in front. I love to build up the people around me. I love a term I heard lately - I am terrific at straightening other's crowns. When it comes to content, I can get up to speed quickly on almost any topic, but I've always liked the harder road. My favorite stories often require "issues management"- where you work to find the silver lining, shine it up, and make sure it outshines shines the dark cloud. Besides the amazing people I worked with, the thing I miss most about news is being in the eye of the storm. My experience manning the desk during the breaking news from floods to fires gave me a taste for crisis comms. I like being that calm voice, whether managing a project, directing crews, or ensuring the right message gets to the people who need it.
