Angelo Mathay serves as an Administrative Judge at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Raleigh, North Carolina. In this role, he adjudicates employment discrimination claims filed by federal employees across three southeastern states. Between 2021 and 2022, Mathay was designated as a Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice's Immigration and Employee Rights Section, Civil Rights Division. He played a pivotal role in investigations concerning citizenship status discrimination in employment practices, national origin discrimination, unfair documentary practices in employment eligibility verification (Form I-9 and E-Verify), and cases of retaliation or intimidation. Additionally, in 2021, he contributed to the U.S. Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, supporting its program for unaccompanied children. Prior to these roles, Mathay's career included positions at influential immigration law and policy organizations in Washington, D.C, such as the National Immigration Law Center, Migration Policy Institute, and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Before moving to North Carolina, he served as a Program Officer at the Robin Hood Foundation in New York City, overseeing segments of the immigration legal services and the food security portfolios. An active member of the community, Mathay engages with multiple commissions and committees. He is a member of the North Carolina Human Relations Commission, the North Carolina Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and previously, the American Bar Association Commission on Immigration. He is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of the Susie Sharp Inn of Court, and part of the Wake County Bar Association Public Service Committee. Mathay teaches a course on Administrative Law at North Carolina State University's School of Public and International Affairs. He has served as a Blume Leader in Residence at Georgetown Law Center, where he provided guidance and mentorship to Blume Scholars and other students with a keen interest in public interest law. His recognition includes being selected for the Filipino Young Leaders Program in 2022 and receiving the prestigious American Bar Association’s on the Rise - Best Under 40 Award in 2023. Mathay holds a bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate, with a specialization in Public Interest Law and Policy, from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.
