About Angharad Smith

PhD Student at the Rosalind Franklin Institute, taking part in the interdisciplinary PhD scheme with the University of Leeds (2022-October 2026). My PhD project focuses on utilising the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) techniques serial FIB/SEM and electron tomography and soft X-Ray tomography at Diamond Light Source as part of my PhD project to help answer important questions about how protein crystals assemble in cells. Supervised by Dr Marcus Gallagher-Jones, Dr Maud Dumoux and Dr Sean Collins. In collaboration with the DYNAMOP team at the Institut de Structurale Biologie (IBS), France. I also took part in the UKRI Science Policy Internship scheme with DESNZ in the Chief Scientific Adviser's (CSA) office from April to July 2025 under Professor Paul Monks. This involved exploring future technologies, writing and presenting technical evidence-based briefs. This enabled me to learn about how science is communicated within the government and translated into policy at the heart of government. Invited speaker at the 8th Annual Workshop on Advances in X-Ray Imaging in June 2025. Achieved a first class in MSci Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry and a Year in Industry at Imperial College London with my final year MSci project carried out at the Francis Crick Institute. I spent my industrial placement year at GSK Consumer Healthcare (now Haleon) in the New Product Development Team, working on antigingivitis mouthwash formulations alongside NMR.
