About Anisa Smith

I am a Certified Nurse Midwife, undertaking my first job after graduating from the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Midwifery program at the University of Minnesota. I'm happy to have found a position that blends practice with education and allows me to continue working with under-served communities. I have nearly seven years of previous experience as a staff nurse at an urban county hospital with Level obstetrical services. I have a passion for working with learners (as well as being one!) The hospital I came from achieved Baby Friendly certification while I was there so I have completed the Step2 breastfeeding education. I also completed a DONA-certified doula training course in 2012. Current BLS and NRP. I am fluent in Spanish as a second language and am very comfortable providing bilingual care to patients. My doctoral capstone project revolved around improving nursing education to families and included providing an educational course to nurses, making alterations to the electronic health record to improve the documentation process, creating and publishing a patient handout, updating hospital policy, performing a substantial review and synthesis of current literature, surveying nurses, and collecting data via a chart review. My clinical experience as a student nurse midwife included 22 months of primary care, gynecological, and antepartum, postpartum and lactation care in clinics, including small procedures such as IUD insertions. I was also able to manage over 100 labors and 65 births including several waterbirths. I worked in a variety of settings including large HMOs, private hospitals, academic hospitals and university practices, and a Catholic hospital.
