About Anja Smith
I am an economist and development practitioner. I am a co-founder of Beam, a research communication consultancy, and a Senior Researcher (and postgraduate research supervisor) at Research on Socio-Economic Policy (ReSEP: http://resep.sun.ac.za/) at the Economics Department of Stellenbosch University. My work has focused on the provision of research and technical capacity in the areas of financial inclusion and financial sector development, health economics and health systems analysis, education and public sector delivery more broadly. I know how to identify societal challenges and how to use data and the research process to provide direction on how to address these challenges. For me, applied economics is data-driven storytelling. After spending 20 years in economic research, I'm starting to master the art of how to turn complex data into narratives for policy and research. While numbers give us insights, it’s the story that makes those insights truly impactful.
