About Ann Power
An environmental detective, I investigate microscopic environmental clues ranging from pollution particles pollen to micro-plastics, and their abundance in lake sediments, urban street dusts, fat bergs and ice from Antartica. I push the boundaries of imaging flow cytometry, adopting it as a novel tool for the rapid identification of these environmental indictors. I am currently working on several collaborative projects, exploring these emerging applications. Much of my research has focused on reconstructing historical and temporal air pollution records using urban ponds in the heavily industrialised Merseyside region (NW England) and understanding how a legacy of pollution exposure impacts human health. I also use IFC to characterise bacterial growth kinetics and phenotypes, for industrial relevant bacteria.
