About Anna Backmark

I know from experience living with a serious chronic disease can be manageable if research has provided understanding for disease modulation and there are medicines to keep you safe from life-limiting symptoms and shortened life expectancy. The fact that far from all patients diagnosed with disease face such a fortunate situation, motivated me to join the pharmaceutical industry. With recent advances in genetics and novel modality drugs, we are at a better position than ever to finding treatments for previously undruggable conditions. After more than 15 years of hands-on experience with molecular biology, protein and cell research at AstraZeneca including leading teams of scientists, I now work as an associate principal scientist in cardiovascular bioscience where we identify and validate novel drug targets. This is challenging work, technically and intellectually, and getting all the way to improving patient’s health is a highly collaborative effort involving many many teams of incredible people. It is fantastic work and playing a part in the process is inspiring. I contribute with expertise in diverse assay technologies and applications from high-throughput screening to mechanism-of-action and in vitro pharmacology studies of the selected drug candidate. I also contribute with authentic and empowering leadership.
