About Anna Friedman

At 15 years old, I flew across the country alone to participate in an editing program at NYU. I had no experience or knowledge of the industry, but I knew that editing was my passion. From my elementary school newspaper to my high school journalism career, I had found a talent and drive to improve the writing I loved to read so much. Several years later, I am a managing editor for the UCSB Undergraduate Journal of History, an editorial intern for The Public Historian and Insight Editions, and earning a degree with a minor in Technical Editing; so it’s safe to say I follow through on my goals. As an editor, I find my greatest joy in taking a piece and making it the best it can be, a process that means collaborating with authors and my team members. Teamwork is a skill I’m practiced in, as it’s the foundation of my role as President of a campus social club and fundamental to work I’ve done as a research assistant for multiple university departments. In these roles, I’ve empathized, connected, and learned from the people I’ve worked with. These connections are something I’ve sought out in my time as an academic peer advisor as well, a job that requires me to work with over students. Whether it’s answering hundreds of emails, managing over a thousand reviewer contacts, coordinating outreach to 200 constituents a day, or organizing Zoom events with over 100 attendees, I have found ways to connect with people in every one of my positions, and I’ve loved every aspect of it. I’ve worked with every kind of publishing–entertainment, social justice, scholarship–and worked with every kind of student, and I can find my interests in every field, meaning I will always have a passion for my work no matter the assignment. At my core, I am a self-starter who will find a way to complete any task and do it well, from creating original style guides to training future staff. I’m open to roles in every area of advising and publishing in Los Angeles and remotely.
