About Anna Funk

I help science and conservation organizations build their communications capacity — not just create content, but develop the strategic direction and sustainable systems that make effective communication possible. From Ecologist to Strategic Communications Leader I started my career as a field ecologist studying prairie restoration. Throughout my work in science, I kept meeting incredible people in conservation who were doing amazing work—and struggling to get their message out. Not because they couldn't write, but because they needed strategic thinking, operational systems, and someone who understood both the science and the communications. After earning my Ph.D. in plant ecology from Michigan State, I shifted to science journalism through an Mass Media Fellowship and later became Associate Editor at Discover magazine. That work confirmed what I'd already suspected: the people doing the most important work often had the least support for communicating about it. That's why I launched Ampliflora in 2024. How I Work I partner with botanical gardens, research institutions, and environmental nonprofits in three ways: Part-Time Communications Leadership: Strategic direction and systems-building for organizations that need communications leadership but can't justify a full-time hire Organizational Development: Launch support for new initiatives, from strategy and systems to websites and messaging Strategic Writing & Science Communication: Expert content that translates complex science accurately and compellingly Current Work I've served as Science Communications Specialist for Holden Forests & Gardens for four years, bridging their Research and Marketing departments. I was founding Board President of Botanical Belonging, building all their organizational systems from the ground up. I write for Wildflower Magazine and Marquette Magazine, edit scripts for the In Defense of Fandom podcast, and work with organizations like the Natural Areas Association.
