About Anna Markey

I am passionate about animal gerontology, small animal geriatric medicine, palliative care, and animal hospice. I believe that what underpins an excellent end-of-life clinician is a superior understanding and deep appreciation for the human-animal bond. I acknowledge that there is, almost always, a complex interplay between this discipline of medicine and the bond. I will always endeavour to explore this interplay with all families to ensure that all my patients and their caregivers are afforded the opportunity to experience a beautiful end-of-life journey.After achieving my Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science through Charles Sturt University in 2020 I endeavoured on a career in small animal practice. I spent the next two years practicing as a general practitioner in a busy southern Sydney practice. I accepted a rotating internship at the Veterinary Specialists of Sydney, Miranda NSW, in 2021. I rotated through their medicine, surgery and emergency and critical care departments. I also gained experience working alongside various specialist anaesthetists, radiologists, and an interventional radiologist MD. Whilst in the final 6 months of my internship I completed a postgraduate certificate in small animal emergency and critical care through the University of Melbourne. I was awarded first class honours in this in July 2022. In 2023 I became certified, by examination, as a hospice and palliative care veterinarian by the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care. Further, I currently hold a (deferred) residency in small animal internal medicine at the Veterinary Specialists of Sydney which commenced in July 2022. To complement my IAAHPC certification and residency I commenced contract work with Rest Your Paws, Australia’s leading home euthanasia and palliative care service in late 2022.
