Background
About Anna Smallwood
Stories | Archives | Objects It was my first experience transcribing an oral history I had conducted. I was new to the area, unaccustomed to the local sounds of the people in the heart of Appalachia and I was playing this phrase over and over but I still had no idea what this woman was saying. I had conducted the interview myself but it couldn't help me know what the phrase "N&W"(Norfolk and Western Railroad) was because it sounded like one word. Finally someone else said "N and W" like the railroad and it made sense. My passion for oral history and archives grew out of this experience. The year after this interview, I started my first internship in archives and transcribed over 50 cassettes documenting the lives of simple people. I pursued an MLIS, concentrating in Cultural Heritage Preservation and am continuing to work in archives discovering the lives of everyday people.
