About Anne Bishop

Since January 2020 I have been investigating bacterial gut pathogens (particularly Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli) with lab models in order to aid in vaccine development with Professor Nicholas Thomson's group at The Sanger Institute, Cambridge. I am also passionate about public engagement and take every opportunity to talk to adults and school children about our research into bacterial gut pathogens, which impact the lives of so many in lower and middle income countries, and careers in science. I am delighted to be given the opportunity to update and re-ignite my research career, after a break due to carer responsibilities, with a Janet Thornton Returning to Research Fellowship. I am looking to make my next career move towards a position that is more public-facing with an emphasis on vaccinology and public health. My PhD was in Cell Biology at University College London with Professor Alan Hall FRS (deceased). I became fascinated by infectious diseases and for ten years studied bacterial gut pathogens (Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enterica Typhi, EPEC and Citrobacter rodentium), including pre-clinical testing of a vaccine against cholera, in post-doctoral research positions in Professor Andy Camilli's lab (at Tufts University Medical School, Boston, MA, USA) and Professor Gordon Dougan (FRS)'s lab (when he was at Imperial College London, UK). Upon returning to the UK I briefly worked with my current supervisor, Nick Thomson, supporting the beginnings of his blossoming cholera research program. I took a career break as a full-time Mum to my twin boys for 5 years then for 3 years I enjoyed using my scientific training (in the fields of cell biology, microbiology and vaccinology) to teach undergraduates at the University of Nottingham (where I gained an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy), before being awarded my current Research Fellowship.
