I completed my MSc "Flood Survival Strategies of Overwintering Snakes" in June 2020. I successfully applied a field technique that I call,"forced or assisted hibernation". All neonatal and juvenile gartersnakes (chosen model species) survived winter within a specially designed artificial burrow, dug vertically into the ground within the "life zone". The life zone is the subterranean space below the frost line and above the water table where there is sufficient oxygen to meet the metabolic needs of snakes during winter. This technique is intended to target naïve neonatal snakes of conservation concern to ensure overwinter survival. Therefore populations limited by excessive wintering mortality, will increase overtime.
