About Ans Baeyens

I have been a researcher in the field of Radiobiology since 2005 when I finished my PhD. I lived in South Africa from 2005 until 2015 where I started a Radiobiology lab at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg. As South Africa has only a few researchers with the scarce skill of radiobiology, there is a high need for more people to be trained in this field. I was committed to increase the pool of researchers and supervised 14 post graduate students in radiobiology projects. Since October 2015, I am appointed as professor at Ghent University, Belgium where I lecture Physics to biomedical students and supervise 4 PhD students in the Radiobiology field. My research mainly deals with chromosomal radiosensitivity of breast cancer, cervical cancer, HIV positive patients and Primary immunodefiency (PID) patients. A second focus of my research is biological dosimetry. Biological dosimetry measures DNA damage induced by exposure to ionizing radiation. Recently, since 2017, I started a third research line on proton irradiation and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Next to the research, I am leading a diagnostic laboratory for radiosensitivity testing of PID patients.
