Background

About Anthi Dipla

I was born and brought up in Alexandroupolis, Greece. I studied Classical archaeology and art at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Oxford (MA, PhD). I specialize in Greek vase painting, iconography and mythology, with further scientific interests in social history and the archaeology of Greek theatre. I have participated in excavations, scientific projects and conferences in Greece, Cyprus and abroad and I have published articles in Greek and international peer-reviewed periodicals and edited volumes. My book, Eros in Pursuit: Abduction and Seduction Scenes on Athenian Vases, is under publication in the British Archaeological Reports series. More specifically, my research projects have been focused on the narration of myths in art and literature in antiquity, so as to forward social notions about gender roles. As an adjunct professor I taught archaeology and history of art at various universities in Greece and abroad, as well as at the Hellenic Open University and the Open University of Cyprus. Μy recent publications include: Eros in Pursuit: Abduction and Seduction Scenes on Athenian Vases (based on doctoral thesis, with considerable modifications, forthcoming at the series British Archaeological Reports, Oxford, 2018) “The Private Spaces of Emotions: The Visual Evidence”, in A. Chaniotis, N. Kaltsas, I. Mylonopoulos (eds), A World of Emotions; Ancient Greece, 700 BC-200 AD (New York 2017) Review of K.G. Hadjinikolaou, Οι λατρείες των θεών και των ηρώων στην Άνω Μακεδονία κατά την αρχαιότητα, Thessaloniki 2011, American Journal of Archaeology Online 120.2 (April 2016) A. Dipla, D. Paleothodoros, “Selected for the Dead; Erotic Themes on Vases from Attic Cemeteries”, in I-M. Back-Danielsson et al (eds), Encountering Imagery; Materialities, Perceptions, Relations (Stockholm 2012) “The Beginning of Narrative Art in Attic Vase Painting: A Review of Proposed Theories”, Eulimene 10-12 (2009-2011)
