Background

About Anthony Dutoi

I am an Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific (UOP), a student-centered liberal-arts school with an unusually tenacious Chemistry Department, which houses a Ph.D. program. In my research capacity, I work on methods that can assist the prediction and understanding of chemical reactions based solely on the laws of physics. This makes me part computer programmer, part applied mathematician, part chemist, and part physicist. In my teaching capacity, I mostly teach General Chemistry, which is more challenging from a human psychology and coaching point of view than from a content point of view. I get to teach my specialties of either undergraduate Quantum Mechanics or graduate Molecular Spectroscopy about once every other year. These classes present solid challenges in "breaking it down" and they have culminated in a draft of a text book. I got my B.S. at Saint Louis University (oddly similar to UOP), and my Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. I did a post-doc at Northwestern University, and I was in Germany twice for a combined total of 5 years, at the Universities of Goettingen and Heidelberg, funded by Fulbright and Humboldt grants, respectively.
