Background

About Anthony Koppers

Anthony Koppers is a Professor in Marine Geology in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU). He also serves as the Associate Vice President for Research Advancement and Strategy with the ambition to develop a framework for sustained growth of the OSU Research Enterprise. He received his B.A, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from the Free University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (1987, 1993, 1998). He was a post-doctoral investigator (1998-2003) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography before joining their research faculty as an Assistant/Associate Research Geophysicist (2003-2007). He moved to OSU in 2007 where he was granted indefinite tenure in 2013. His research focuses on marine geology and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology to understand the volcanic evolution of the ocean basins in its widest facets, from studying in situ oceanic crust formation to better understanding the evolution of islands arcs, hotspot trails, and submarine oceanic plateaus. His major contributions are in validating the hotspot theory and mobility of associated plumes in the Earth’s mantle wind. He has participated in 14 seagoing expeditions, three times as chief scientist. He is director of the 50+ years old OSU Argon Geochronology Laboratory, co-director of the OSU Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR), and lead investigator of the Magnetics Information Consortium (MagIC) and the Framework for Integrated Earth Science and Technology Applications (FIESTA) which provide online data repositories for research data. He chaired both the U.S. Science Advisory Committee (2011-2013) and the JOIDES Resolution Facility Board (2015-2018) for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). He is lead investigator of the OSU Data Center that serves the cyberinfrastructure of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) large facility. He is member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geochemical Society, and The Oceanography Society. In 2019-2020 he served as the co-lead editor for the 2050 Science Framework in support of future scientific ocean drilling. In 2019-2022 he served as Associate Dean for Research in CEOAS.
