Anthony Rauld is a Chilean-American visual anthropologist and filmmaker based in Santiago, Chile. Anthony is part of the Linguistics Department at the University of Chile, where he teaches American History and Culture through Literature and Film, the philosophy and anthropology of Moby Dick, Chilean Recent History and Culture through Literature and Film, and Culture and Power: Mechanisms of Social and Cultural Control. He is founder and coordinator of three extension programs: American Cultural Studies, British Cultural Studies and Chilean Studies. He has produced several documentary films on Chilean social and political issues, including a film about the social movement against the Pinochet regime in the 1980’s, The Invisible Country (2014), which is now part of the Museum of Memory and Human Rights audiovisual archive, as well as La Negra City (2010), a film about a marginalized shantytown neighborhood in northern Chile (presented at the American Anthropological Association Conference in Philadelphia). His film Wixage Anai (2007), about urban Mapuche in Santiago, received an award at the CLACPI indigenous festival in Oaxaca, Mexico. The film is also part of the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino archive. His more recent projects included a series of ethnographic shorts, Encoded Stories (with artist Guillermo Bert), filmed across Latin America (Chile, Guatemala, Oaxaca, Peru) between 2010 and 2016. As part of this series, Anthony’s short film entitled Luciana and the Weavers received a special award at the 2016 Catalina Film Festival. He also made Voting is More than Voting (2019), a short film for SERVEL (National Election Service), as well as Common Thread (2019), a film about arpilleras during the Pinochet dictatorship for MEMCH LA, exhibited at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.
