About Anthony Staines

I'm a doctor, an academic, and a social activist. I did medicine in TCD, trained in the Adelaide, when it was still in Peter St. Graduated in 1984, started clinical training in paediatrics in Ireland, but finished up my training, and my PhD, in the UK, specialising in academic Public Health. I've worked as an academic epidemiologist since 1990, first in Leeds, then at Imperial College in London. I worked as a lecturer in UCD medical school for a decade, and have been the professor of Health Systems in DCU since 2007. I've done a lot of basic epidemiology on childhood diabetes, and on haematological malignancies. Most of my work now is on child health, health service design, and health policy. In 2013 and 2014 I was seconded to HSE to develop an IT strategy for the Irish health services. I work pro-bono on a number of boards, including the Irish Blood Transfusion Service, and Quality Matters which I chair, and I am a former member of the boards of the Higher Education Authority, and the Health Insurance Authority. Politically I'm largely a Fine Gael supporter, of what used to be called the 'Just Society' stripe, with Social Democrat leanings.
