On the face of it, traffic and transport planning is quite possibly the most boring profession on the planet. Trains, planes and automobiles? How many people turned left? Did you put that roundabout in? So exciting, that when Tom Cruise was deciding the best way to hide Ethan Hunt in the mundane, he chose.yep, traffic guy. Thanks Tom. So why then do I enjoy what I do? I’m pretty sure I’m not a nerd (though I will mention that I come from a planning background rather than engineering.); what is it that makes things exciting and challenging on a daily basis? After more than 27 years in the industry, I keep coming back to the same thing (and it’s not Tom Cruise). It’s the opportunity to think. Why should a trip rate published by RMS be gospel? Why shouldn’t a mixed use development be appropriate? How will proximity to rail affect parking demand? How on earth are you going to get your truck in there? Does 20 minutes of school peak madness really spell the end of the world as we know it? Does Level of Service F mean anything anymore in a metropolis? Think about it. Think about it, then work through it, talk to the stakeholders, talk to the ‘bad guys’, know the local conditions, look at it from this way and that, refocus and weigh the options and then. Think about it once more before reporting. I probably should have been a lawyer, but that’s the one thing that’s even more boring than being a traffic guy.
