About April Dunn

Early in my career I was director of two early childhood education programs. In those programs I supervised a team of professionals that worked together to provide learning experiences through play to children 6months-5years. I established a curriculum for teachers to use in their daily classrooms to ensure children were being provided with quality activities to foster their learning and social skills. I created an accounting system to ensure monthly tuition was up to date and worked with families to set up payment plans in the event they had fallen behind on their child’s tuition. I was also the start-up director for an Early Head Start Program. I assisted in the design of inclusive classrooms to meet the varying needs of children 18months-3 years. I collaborated with a team of professionals to form partnerships with families to support child development and family goals. I planned and executed parent education opportunities to families enrolled in the program. I am currently a special education teacher at Allan Cott School, the educational component of Glenwood, Inc. I supervise a team of educational professionals that work together to provide direct support and education to individuals with Autism. I create lesson plans that follow Alabama Department of Education curriculum guidelines and train my team on the implementation of IEPs and naturalistic teaching techniques. In my supervisory role I prepare daily schedules for classroom students and team members as well as adhere to state mandated deadlines. In all my supervisory roles I support employee engagement through providing continuous feedback to team members, recognizing their strengths and building on their weaknesses. As a result, the classroom is functional and engaging for the team and the students we serve.
