About April Evans

Dr. Evans is a UJMT Fogarty Global Health fellow and a third-year Pediatric Hematology-Oncology fellow at the University of North Carolina. Dr Evans’s goal is to make patient reported outcome (PRO) measures the global gold standard to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in Sub Saharan Africa, ultimately reducing symptom burden and mortality. Her fogarty year was spent in Lilongwe, Malawi with UNC Project Malawi’s Cancer program. She is working with Dr. Kate Westmoreland, world renowned global oncologist and Dr. Reeve, an internationally recognized psychometrician whose area of expertise is in PROs methodology. Her project titled, “Implementation and psychometric validation of the Chichewa Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO)-CTCAE tool to measure symptomatic treatment-related adverse events among pediatric and adolescent Lymphoma patients in Malawi”, will allow the implementation of cutting-edge PRO measures in Malawi, ultimately harnessing the voice of vulnerable, and often silenced, patients across the globe. Dr Evans prior global health and training experience laid a strong foundation; her pediatric hematology oncology training and UJMT fellowship have placed her on a trajectory to expand her experience in global oncology research, gain knowledge and expertise in PROs methodology, and provide her with exceptional mentorship to ensure success.
