Background
About April Mossop
As a biomedical science student, I would like to work in a research lab or teaching, specifically researching neuroscience or cancer genetics as it is my belief that science is not just a career but an intricate way of thinking. As a teacher, I would love to educate secondary school pupils in science and see them achieve their full potential. Current modules include clinical biochemistry, cellular pathology, genetics, microbiology, practical physiology, and hoping to optionally study neuroscience next year. Having completed an EPQ and MOOC course on cancer research and diagnostic statistics, I have a keen interest in the areas requiring investigation and attention to detail, along with effectively relaying information. Whilst I have always had an interest in science, I knew I needed to consolidate this with first-hand experience. I volunteered for 5 years as a sports leader to achieve my level 2 'Young Leaders' award, which required planning, adaptability and forward-thinking whilst working with children whilst also playing a sport I love. Working for the NHS and having a sister who has juvenile idiopathic arthritis, I have been given a privileged insight into not only patient care but patient satisfaction on a personal level. Working as a waitress in a café designed for those vulnerable with physical or mental disabilities, I can see the attitude and dedication needed - something I continue to develop from week to week. These attitudes I have were useful when completing the National Citizenship Service and developing my skills on being flexible and decisive, vital for a multidisciplinary team. My experience at Oxford University confirmed nothing fascinates me more than cutting-edge science and solving problems. To demonstrate this, I completed independent and team maths challenges to show my mathematical and analytical skills, whilst doing something I enjoy. The desire to be a problem-solver and aid people lies at the heart of my motivation, although science entails much more than this and I would love to experience this on a more in-depth level throughout my career.
