CONTACT: ari.helo(at)helsinki.fi SHORT BIO: Ari Helo (Ph.D, Docent/Adjunct Professor) is a Visiting Researcher and a part-time lecturer at the University of Helsinki. Before his current position he has taught Intellectual History, Political History, American Studies, Methodology, and Cultural Studies at numerous Finnish universities and has worked as an ASLA-Fulbright Fellow and as an Academy of Finland Fellow at the University of Virginia and at the University of Helsinki for several years. He is also the author of several research monographs, among them Thomas Jefferson's Ethics and the Politics of Human Progress (Cambridge University Press, 2014). ADDITIONAL MERITS: • 2 STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS: Univ. of Helsinki, 2018 & Univ. of Oulu, 2015. • Acted as the Personal Study Plan Adviser (omaopettaja, including HOPS–tutoring) for the 2013 intake of 12 students in the History of Science and Ideas Program during 2013–2016 at the University of Oulu. • Held regular book exams on approximately 30 textbooks. • Planned, held, and graded the entrance examination (alone) for History of Science and Ideas M.A. Program at the University of Oulu twice, in 2013 and in 2017. • Coordinating all teaching in North American Studies with the professor for 2002–3; 2017–18; 2018–19; 2019–20. • Created and maintained the following teaching and research related websites: the North American Studies Blog (University of Helsinki), 2017–2020 and the official website of FASA (Finnish American Studies Association), 2009–2021. • Conference Director for 5 international conferences (60–100 participants) on North American Studies, on American Studies, and on American–Finnish Diplomatic Relations in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2015, and 2018. The director's duties included creating and managing a detailed budget varying from to Euro; acquiring funding for the event; setting up the conference organization; selecting the speakers with the conference committee; preparing conference sessions; marketing; managing media contacts; training the conference staff; etc. • Orientation (perehdyttäminen) of several American visiting Fulbright Bicentennial Professors for the North American Studies program in Helsinki, as well as providing them with access to computer systems, keys, teaching facilities, etc. in cooperation with the Fulbright organization and HR and computer facilities personnel at the university.
