Background
About Ariel Loucks
I am passionate about helping children enrich their minds and develop their abilities. When I was in elementary school and I saw how dedicated my teachers were, I knew that this was the path I wanted to follow. In order to achieve this goal, I have taken several steps to strengthen my knowledge which will help me to become a successful educator. In my junior year of high school, I began working as a childcare assistant at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort. This experience has helped me to improve my work ethic and classroom management skills, especially when it comes to working with young children. Presently, I attend the State University of New York at Oneonta studying adolescent education with a concentration in social studies, a program ranked in the top 10% nationwide according to the National Council on Teacher Quality. To ensure that I get as much as I can out of my college experience, I also continued my devotion to tennis by becoming a member of SUNY Oneonta’s NCAA Division women’s tennis team. Being a student-athlete has had a tremendous contribution to many important teaching skills such as time management, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork. In my sophomore year, I was chosen by my tennis coach to be the women’s tennis team OPROS mentor. An OPROS mentor advises and helps underclassmen athletes maintain their academic success while also making the transition from middle school to high school as a student-athlete. In addition, my coach assigned me as a freshman mentor to both our men’s and women’s tennis freshman class and a recruiting advisor to the high school students interested in playing tennis at SUNY Oneonta. On a final note, William Glasser once said, “Effective teaching may be the hardest job there is.” I am confident that I can be an effective teacher.
