Background
About Aris Winger
Better Quantitative Experiences lead to a Better Quality of Life. I am wholly convinced of this. I was an orphan by age 11, thankful to be rescued and raised by my grandmother and aunt. My heroes are Black women. They sheltered me from the street trauma of the inner city of 90's Washington D.C. I threw myself into mathematics and that saved my life. Progressing in mathematics can improve and save lives. It's one of my core messages and mantras. I am overly grateful to have witnessed and experienced this message come to fruition in a variety of my roles. I have seen it in helping students overcome barriers that entry level mathematics provides for undergraduates at Georgia Gwinnett College, paving the way for them to access their STEM goals. I've felt it as Executive Director of the National Association of Mathematicians, an institution whose programming is dedicated to serving underrepresented mathematicians. I try to reproduce this message broadly through writing books about advocating for those who try to excel in our discipline but who are often held back through no fault of their own. I try to live it everyday to foster safe educational spaces for middle and high schoolers as Co-Founder and Co-Director of Hybridge Academy, a non-traditional school dedicated to educating those who are too often on the margins. I hope to expand the message through working with K-12 teachers all over the country through professional development in developing spaces of belonging and safety for students. I try to cultivate the message in helping them rewrite mathematical tasks to be more culturally relevant in order to affirm the various backgrounds of students in their classes. I hope to model it through mentoring, in illuminating the vast potential in others that they might not see in themselves. I have been overwhelmed by the message in writing with incarcerated individuals about mathematics and having them report how it brightens their day in the darkest of times. Most personally, for me, I strive to instill this message in my daughter, the absolute light of my life. I am diligent, focused, and ambitious. Most importantly, I am mission driven. A quantitatively educated world is a higher quality world. I'm pushing everyday to bring that to fruition, for everyone. Join me.
